He married Maria Smith at St Annes Westminster in 1836; she died at Paddington, NSW, 12 Jan 1857.His ADB biographer, G. L. Lockley notes that his final publications, The Intellectual Sciences, (2 vols, Sydney. 1872), which contained lectures given by him at the Australian College has been claimed as the first serious philosophical work published in Australia.
