b'6535127th January 1851 letter from The Under Secretary to the Government of Bengal (Dalrymple) to The Sheriff of Calcutta, with details of the ten European Convicts under sentence of transportation informing him that passage has been procured per Barque Alibi, which vessel is now ready to sail for Van Diemens Land. A list of Bengal Convicts and Bombay Convicts is provided. The Barque Alibi arrived in Van Diemens Land on 25th May 1851 with just sixteen convicts onboard. Most of the convicts from India appear to have been military, having been court martialled (Jenkins, McNamara, Creane, etc.) or found guilty of insubordination (Sallone, Webb), desertion (Kiely) or carnal knowledge (Haines). An extremely rare original document which confirms that convicts were not only being sent from England.$500750352SARAH ANN HILL - FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER AND TRANSPORTED FOR THE TERM OF HER NATURAL LIFE:Two court documents recording the proceedings at York Assizes in December 1851 at which Hill was found guilty of killing her new-born baby and leaving the body in a bonnet-box on Wakefield Railway Station. She was initially sentenced to death by hanging but there was a huge outcry and, as this document further records, the sentence was commuted to her being Transported beyond the Seas. The second document accompanied Hill on her removal to a Government Prison. Described as a stout strong active woman she arrived at Hobart in August 1852, one of 220 all female convicts aboard the ship Sir Robert Seppings.$500750353A SLIGHT MISUNDERSTANDING?.
