b'69564AN EXTRAORDINARY LEDGER BOOK RECORDING THE CONVICTS EMPLOYED IN A WOOD GANG BETWEEN APRIL 1866 and JULY 1868:The front cover further titled No.27, the ledger of 184 pages, is a page-by-page record of the work performed by long-term convicts, mainly cutting firewood, running waggons, cook, processing wood, etc. Each page provides details of the convict, his number, where he has been transferred from, the ship on which he was transported, his employment on a week-by-week basis, the amount of work performed, his conduct, his industriousness and details of the officer in charge. The convicts are transferred to the Wood Gang and eventually are sent elsewhere, with places noted including Safety Cove, Eaglehawk Neck, Mount Arthur, Impression Bay, Garden Point, the Settlement Cookhouse, Hospital, Settlement Farm, Settlement Laundry, Removed to Guano Makers, to Mechanics Gang, to Lunatic Department as Cook, to Garden Point Gang, Department Prison, Removed to Quarry Gang, etc.William Bullock, arrived in Van Diemens Land in December 1852 aboard Equestrian. He had been sentenced to be transported for 10 years, but in July 1866, still a prisoner, he found himself chopping wood six days a week.John McPhillips, arrived in VDL in August 1844 aboard Cadet. Sentenced to 7 years transportation he was still a prisoner 22 years later, having also spent years on NorfolkThomas Riddle, arrived in VDL in November 1844 aboard Island. Agincourt. Sentenced to transportation for life, he spent Thomas Harberd (Herbert), arrived in VDL in 1831 aboardJanuary and February 1867 chopping wood.Argyle.
