b'92John Monash (1865 -1931)JOHN MONASH was a pre-eminent Australian: an engineer, military leader and nation builder. He contributed much to building Australia, evidenced by his many bridges and other constructions before World War I, his work as Vice Chancellor of Melbourne University as well as driving the electrification of Victoria in the last decade of his life. This provided the basis of the manufacturing hub that the state was to become.Monash is particularly remembered for his wartime achievements and identified as possibly the greatest general in WWI. After the war, still concerned for his troops, he initiated the Anzac Day ceremonies in Melbourne and oversaw the public appeal for funds for the Shrine of Remembrance and supervised its construction. Monash was committed to lifelong learning. Monash believed everyone should: equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community. The General Sir John Monash Foundation was established consistent with his values for the purpose of awarding scholarships for postgraduate study at an overseas university, supporting academic excellence and the growth of leadership qualities for the benefit of Australias future. The Monash family want the breadth of his achievements to be widely understood. Most of his personal collection that documents and illustrates his lifetime of service to the Nation has been donated to institutions including the Australian War Memorial and the National Library of Australia. The family however have retained some items that have had special significance over the generations. With the passing of Monashs last grandchild, the family are aware that the items may be able to help others through their sale, rather than be stored away from sight. The intent is to donate the proceeds over time to charitable organisations of which John Monash would have approved, in the areas of social welfare, music and science.Michael Bennett Great-grandson of John Monash'
