Commanding4th Infantry Brigade, Aust. Imperial Force.80mm high (fully extended). In 1884, at the age of 19, John Monash joined the newly formed University Company, D Company, 4th Battalion, Victorian Rifles. He rose through the ranks, and by 1913 was a soldier with knowledge of staff work, transport, supply, engineering and intelligence. In 1914, the First World War broke out. He was among the first under fire at Gallipoli and was the only Australian brigade commander among the original troops not killed or evacuated as wounded. By 1918, he was in charge of the entire Australian Corps. In this same year, King George V knighted him on the battlefield on 12 August, following the success of the battle of Amiens on 8 August.Following the outbreak of war, Monash had taken command of the AIFs 4th Infantry Brigade, landing at Gallipoli on 26 April 1915. In July 1915 he was promoted to brigadier, so this cup is a unique survivor of Monashs 3 months at Gallipoli as a Colonel. Monash took his brigade to France in June 1916. He became a major general in July and took command of the 3rd Division.$3,0005,000715'
